DescriptionTulsi plant, Ocimum tenuiflorum, is the medicinal herb of Ayurveda. Not to be confused with Holy Basil, Ocimum gratissimum, the ceremonial herb of Indian spiritual tradition – see the separate listing for Holy Basil. Both plants are called Tulsi, and both are also called Holy (or Sacred) Basil. We have separated the names and assigned a species to avoid confusion. Tulsi, Ocimum tenuiflorum, has the familiar clove fragrance (Eugenol) of these species and is a delicate, spindly plant with small, dark green leaves. The plant displays purple venation, particularly on the stem. This species is also known as Krishna Tulsi. This cultivar has tested the highest concentration of immune-stimulating compounds. The Tulsi plant is native to India and prefers a sunny, warm position. An annual, growing to about 0.6m tall and producing purple flowers at maturity. Drought and frost tender.Seed for the Tulsi plant is also available.Temperate Tulsi is another type of Tulsi that makes a delicious and healing tea.
