Description Family Bignoniaceae Originating from S.E. USA. Abundant, purple/near black young foliage, and upright bunches of orchid-like scented flowers are borne on a stately broad spreading crown of branches. Its large deciduous leaves slowly turn green but retain a purple hue, making the perfect backdrop for the many panicles of large fleshy tubular flowers, with yellow and purple markings, making a truly outstanding display. There are usually flowers low enough in the crown to enjoy the sweet scent and intricate markings of the blooms, which are followed by long hanging bean-like seed pods. Easy to grow in most soil types in full sun. Height and spread after 20 – 50 years 12m x 10m.
